Doha: The FIVB World Tour moves to Doha for the Men’s FIVB Qatar Beach Volleyball Open which will kick off today at the Al Gharafa Stadium with the qualification round.
The event, which will end on November 8, is the penultimate Open event of the year, before the Mangaung Open in South Africa from December 9 to 14. It will be the first FIVB World Tour event to be hosted by Qatar.
The Doha Open begins just two days after the end of the Paraná Open in Argentina, which saw Canada’s Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter claim men’s gold, while Brazil’s Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes claimed their fourth consecutive gold medals in the women’s competition.
Implemented in 2013, the format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments – whether FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam or FIVB Beach Volleyball Open – is the same, featuring pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds.
Action begins today at 3.30pm on the four courts and 56 teams from all over the world will be seen in action.
The hosts will be represented by four teams at the five-day championship.  The Qatari teams will comprise of Jefferson and Thiago, Mahmoud Essam and Asef Sultan, Tamer Abderasool and Abdulaziz Khalouf, besides Ahmed Tijan and  Sherif Younis.
