Doha: In a bid to help reduce the soaring costs of weddings for young unmarried Qatari men, the Qatari government has issued directives to construct a number of wedding halls in the country that will be available for Qataris free of charge.

The wedding halls are to be constructed in different parts of the country.

The directives were issued by the Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday to the State’s Special Engineering Office.

The first wedding hall complex, inspired by the Qatari heritage, is set to be built in Al Rafaa area in the next two months and it is expected to be complete by 2014.

The project, supervised by the Engineering Office, will see five halls coming up with a capacity of 500 persons each.

The design of the halls will be such that would allow merging of the five halls to be a large one with a capacity of 2,500 persons. The new halls are to be equipped with the latest audio-visual technologies, and highest safety measures will be taken into consideration.

A 260,000 sq m plot has been allocated for the complex. The area will include buildings and facilities which will be built on 15,000 sq m, in addition to open areas, five gates and large car parking space, QNA reported yesterday.
