DOHA: Julian Smart-trained Al Bashtoon yesterday produced a late surge to win the Al Britha Cup at Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) giving jockey Richard Mullen his sixth victory this season.
Trailing second-placed Maazouz and Saint De Faust for most part of the race, Al Bashtoon produced a late burst of aggression in the 1800m dirt race to seal his win in a time of 2:05.69.
Earlier Harry Bentley rode Upholland in fine style to seal win in race seven at QREC, finishing with a time of 1:55.80.
Trained by Jassim Al Ghazali, Bentley powered Upholland to an impressive win ahead of Crafted - ridden by Gary Carter and Defendant - who had Mullen in the saddle.
It was Bentley’s second win of the day after the Briton sealed victory in race six.
Bentley powered Barzan to secure the first prize worth QR28,500 in the 1800m race.
Napinda, ridden by T O’Shea, finished second while Inis Airc - with S Golam in the saddle - ended in third spot, some five lengths behind Bentley.
Meanwhile today, Dubday will be seeking glory in the Group 2 Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani Trophy. The race, worth QR1m, will be run over 2000m. THE PENINSULA
