DOHA: Bayern Munich have signed Jan Kirchhoff from Mainz, with the German defender to join up with the Bundesliga giants at the end of the season, sporting director Matthias Sammer said yesterday.
The 22-year-old Kirchhoff, whose deal with Mainz comes to an end this summer, has signed a contract until 2016, said Sammer, in Qatar on a club training camp.
“It’s the player we wanted,” he said. “He’s a very interesting player, a raw diamond with extremely big capabilities.”
The 22-year-old had also caught the attention of Borussia Dortmund and Schalke, but he has opted to continue his career at the Allianz Arena instead. Kirchhoff came through the ranks of the Eintracht Frankfurtyouth academy, before joining Mainz in 2007.
Today, Bayern Munich will play a behind-closed-doors friendly against Qatar Stars League (QSL) champions Lekhwiya at Khalifa Stadium at 6:30pm, as part of their training camp in Doha.
