Atletico Madrid’s midfielder Koke celebrates after scoring during the Spanish league match againsst Malaga CF at Rosaleda Stadium in Malaga, yesterday.
MADRID: Spanish international Koke rolled home the winner as Atletico Madrid moved three points ahead of Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a 1-0 victory at Malaga yesterday.
In a game short on clear-cut opportunities, Koke was in the right place to slot home his fourth goal of the season 20 minutes from time after Willy Caballero had denied Adrian Lopez from close range.
Barcelona can move back to the top with a win over Elche today before travelling to face Atletico at the Vicente Calderon next weekend.
Real Madrid are now eight points adrift of the leaders, but can also cut the gap when they host Celta Vigo tomorrow.
“We need to wait until tomorrow to see if Barcelona win and continue as leaders. That is what we are accustomed to,” said Atletico boss Diego Simeone.
“It was a victory earned by the group because it was a very difficult game.
“Malaga tried to give us the ball, take advantage of the counter-attack and they defended well.
“We weren’t creating a lot of chances, but in the end the team managed to win the game.”
Atletico’s Juanfran had the first big chance of the match when he broke into the Malaga box on 21 minutes, but Caballero parried his low drive and the ball rebounded fortunately off Marcos Angeleri away for a corner. Eliseu was first to threaten for Malaga as he was played in on the right side of the box only for his low effort to be easily held by Thibaut Courtois.
After struggling to break down a well-organised Malaga in the first period, Atletico boss Diego Simeone withdrew teenager Oliver Torres for Adrian at the break in an attempt to find the breakthrough.
However, Atletico suffered a setback ahead of Barca’s visit just 10 minutes into the second half when Juanfran was booked for obstructing Vitorino Antunes and will now be suspended for the Catalans’ visit.
Adrian should then have opened the scoring when he was brilliantly played in by Diego Costa, but he delayed in front of goal and allowed Weligton to dispossess him with a fine sliding challenge.
Costa’s creation was to prove vital though as he again set-up Adrian inside the area and this time the rebound off Caballero’s legs fell kindly for the arriving Koke to slot into an unguarded net.
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi is showing lethal form in training that suggests he will be back to his best soon although he will not feature in today’s clash with Elche, Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said.
The Argentine has had three training sessions in Barcelona since returning from his recovery programme in Buenos Aires and Rosario and scored a hat-trick in a practice game on Friday.
“I am very pleased with his progress. He is physically strong and is showing the killer look he had before. If he continues like this and maintains the confidence then he will return to be the player that everyone remembers,” Martino told a news conference.
Messi has suffered a series of hamstring strains since the end of last season and has been out of action since mid-November.
“The treatment always depends on the extent of problem but we haven’t dealt with this one any different to the others. The aim is to build him up sufficiently so that he will be strong for the rest of the season,” said Martino.
