DOHA: Qatar University’s (QU) ongoing commitment to foster its Qatarisation initiatives has resulted in graduating competent and skilled individuals who joined its ranks as faculty members and staff, and the labour market as professionals and leaders across sectors in Qatar.
At the institution’s College of Law (LAWC), Qatar’s only law college, the process has been implemented through the College’s focus on human development, and attracting well-qualified Qatari faculty and students. Led by the Dean Dr Mohammed Al Khulaifi, the College has 1,093 (86.3 percent) Qatari students out of 1266, and 14 (27.4 percent ) Qatari faculty members out of 51.
Qatarisation is one of the most important key components in LAWC’s strategic plan, in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, said Dr Al Khulaifi, adding, “We, at LAWC, are proud of our excellence in attracting Qatari students. Each semester, the College enrolls at least 90 percent Qatari students, and this year the national admission ratio reached 92 percent.”
Dr Al Khulaifi also highlighted the increased need of highly-qualified Qataris in the legal sector, as well as the various arrow of professions that law graduates have in both the public and private sectors. The government has provided national post-doctorates in law with the privilege to be at the same time professors in law and practicing lawyers, said Dr Al Khulaifi.
He added that LAWC is achieving ongoing progress by encouraging national students to pursue their postgraduate education, and contribute to the country’s growth and development.
He also noted that the College offers its students lab and practical courses, which enable them to gain additional skills and abilities they need to join the workplace. “We are also planning to establish a Master’s degree in law at LAWC during the next academic year, the first of its kind in Qatar,” said Dr Al Khulaifi.
The College is also organising a number of seminars, workshops and training sessions especially designed to foster the development of national intellectual capacities and promote research initiatives. A series of seminars was conducted by postgraduates for first-year students to help them choose their discipline in law, and gain better insight into the academic life at the College, the duties of faculty members, and the benefits that law graduates receive, Dr Al Khulaifi said.
