Berlin--Germany defender Jerome Boateng has been banned for three Bundesliga matches, ruling him out of action until Bayern Munich's Champions League last 16, first-leg clash at Shakhtar Donetsk.

The 26-year-old was shown a straight red card for fouling Schalke's Sidney Sam in the 17th-minute of Bayern's 1-1 home draw at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

The sport court of the German Football Association (DFB) took a dim view of his challenge and found him guilty of unsporting conduct.

Bayern have 24 hours to request a hearing to appeal the decision which means Boateng is suspended for their forthcoming league matches at VfB Stuttgart, Hamburg and Paderborn.

The centre-back will next be available for Bayern's Champions League clash on February 17 against Donetsk, which has been moved to Lviv due to the political situation in Ukraine.
