Lucknow: Indefinite curfew was clamped in Tanda town of Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkarnagar district yesterday following incidents of arson and violence after a local  religious leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants, police said.

In the rioting that followed the murder on Sunday night, several vehicles, including a police vehicle and a state transport bus were torched and policemen were beaten up.

More than a dozen people were injured in the stone-pelting and violence, police said, adding the decision to clamp curfew followed.

Since the deceased leader Babu Lal Gupta was from the Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV), a group founded by Yogi Aditya Nath, the Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Gorakhpur, police apprehended more trouble. Gupta was shot dead in Adalatpur area over a property dispute, police said.

Officials said that the situation was control but a constant vigil was being kept on the situation to avoid a further flare-up.
