Eight kids die in bus accident

Srinagar: Eight schoolchildren were killed and 12 others injured when their bus rolled down into a gorge near here yesterday. A senior police officer said a school bus carrying children back home from school fell into a 300 feet deep gorge near Kandivari village, 70km from here, after the driver lost control of the vehicle. The bus was going from Dialgam to Kokernag town. Five children died on the spot while 15 others were injured and were taken to hospital. Three kids later succumbed to their injuries.

Maoists kill five policemen

Ranchi: Five policemen were killed yesterday in a gun battle with Maoist guerrillas in Jharkhand, police said. The incident took place at Chainpur town of Gumla district, some 170km from here, when Maoists attacked a police party while it was patrolling a weekly market. They also took away three rifles from the policemen. Four police personnel were killed on the spot while one died in hospital, an official said.

Rape accused seeks nod for test

New Delhi: Vinay Sharma, one of the accused in the December 16, 2012 gang rape in Delhi, yesterday sought permission to appear in an exam for a clerk’s job in the Indian Air Force. Sharma’s counsel moved an application before the fast-track court of Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna, seeking two days’ interim bail to appear in the exam scheduled for April 7. Court told police to file their reply on the application by today.

Six die in house collapse

MUMBAI: At least six people died and up to 15 were injured when an unauthorised building under construction collapsed on the outskirts of Mumbai, police said. “A section of an under-construction, seven-storey building collapsed suddenly at around 6.30pm,” an official at the Shil-Dayghar police station in the Thane region of Maharashtra state said late yesterday. Police said at least 20 people had been rescued from under the debris. AGENCIES
