Doha: The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud yesterday said the assassination of the head of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), Mohammed Beshir, was strongly denounced at a meeting in Doha yesterday.
Participants in the extraordinary meeting of the committee monitoring implementation of the Darfur peace agreement yesterday denounced the attack by the JEM Gibriel lbraham Group in which the head of JEM and other leaders were killed.
The meeting also demanded the release of hostages as soon as possible, Al Mahmoud added.
In a press statement after the meeting, Al Mahmoud said that the session discussed the fallout of the assassination of Beshir.
The Minister added that participants stressed their determination to continue the peace process and called on armed movements that did not join peace negotiations based on the Doha Document to do so without preconditions.
Al Mahmoud said the meeting was also briefed by the JEM representative who survived the assassination, adding that the JEM had decided to appoint the commander, Bakhit Dabjo, as its chairman for 60 days from the date of the assassination — May 12 — and they would elect a new JEM leader later.
He said the JEM confirmed commitment to the agreement signed in Doha and its involvement in the peace process.
With regard to the recent Donor Conference in Doha, Al Mahmoud noted that a strategy had been approved by the conference, including the start of urgent projects.
The Minister stressed Qatar’s commitment to amounts, including $500 million as announced as well as $88.6m allocated to support implementation of urgent projects as stated in the strategy.
“We in Qatar approved the amounts as directed by the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
“We want implementation of urgent projects in Darfur to be in accordance with what has been approved by the Doha conference, under a mechanism of control and transparency,” Al Mahmoud added.
