Tents at the Jarablus refugee camp on Syria’s northern border.
Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) is working to improve the living conditions of Syrian refugees by enhancing cooperation with World Vision International (WVI).
Humanitarian efforts by QRC and WVI at the Jarablus refugee camp on Syria’s northern borders will alleviate the suffering of refugees and displaced persons and fulfil the basic needs of groups in distress.
Cooperation between QRC and WVI entails developing Jarablus border camp and accomplishing QRC’s efforts to improve living conditions there to preserve the dignity of its inhabitants.
This is to be achieved by providing for the refugees’ needs according to minimal humanitarian standards, and establishing a near to ideal situation at the camp, which hosts around 210 families in over 200 tents.
QRC and WVI have agreed on coordination and implementation of several projects that will improve facilities in the camp.
These include restoring the camp’s outer walls to prevent harmful animals from entering; implementing a water and sanitation programme that includes showers and toilet areas in accordance with the inhabitants’ customs and traditions; provision of water, stored in specialised water tanks inside the camp, and installing water heaters for showers and personal hygiene; installing common kitchens inside the camp; providing primary healthcare by establishing a clinic that will be associated with the camp, developing an educational and entertainment programme for the children in accordance with international standards of child protection within a dedicated large tent equipped with various tools; and implementing maternal healthcare programmes.
QRC and WVI have also agreed to exchange information of common interest.
Internal displacement of Syrians as a result of conflict in civilian areas has caused a major disaster, especially as most of the borders are closed to those seeking safety in neighbouring countries. This has forced thousands of displaced people to head to border crossings to seek safety.
Difficulty in providing for the needs of camps in Syria and tight regulations governing transportation across borders have had a negative impact on the lives of refugees in the camps.
