Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has issued a strong advisory reminding motorists that using private vehicles for purposes other than those specified in their licence, particularly operating them as taxis, constitutes a traffic violation subject to legal accountability.

In a public awareness campaign shared across its official channels yesterday, the MoI emphasised that such practices not only breach regulations but also compromise road safety and public trust.

“Using private vehicles for purposes other than specified in the licence (taxi) is a traffic violation that exposes its owner to legal accountability. Your commitment reflects your awareness and responsibility,” the Ministry stated.

According to Article 5/57 of the Traffic Law, it is prohibited to use private or mechanically propelled vehicles for purposes not permitted under their licence. Violators risk fines, vehicle impoundment, and other penalties as outlined in Qatari traffic regulations. The move aims to curb unlicensed transportation services that have occasionally surfaced in the market, ensuring only authorised operators provide taxi and limousine services.

The warning comes amid ongoing efforts by the Traffic Department to enhance road safety and regulate the transport sector. Unlicensed operations can lead to issues including lack of proper insurance coverage, inadequate vehicle maintenance standards, and potential risks to passengers. Official taxis and ride-hailing services licensed by the relevant authorities undergo strict vetting, ensuring driver background checks, vehicle fitness certificates, and adherence to safety protocols.

Traffic experts at the MoI recommend that residents and visitors utilise approved platforms and licensed taxis readily available across Doha and other cities.

These services guarantee reliability, metered fares, and accountability in case of any incidents. The ministry urged all vehicle owners to adhere strictly to the terms of their vehicle registration and licence.

This advisory aligns with broader national initiatives to modernise transportation while maintaining high safety standards in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. The MoI continues to leverage technology, including surveillance cameras and awareness campaigns, to enforce regulations effectively. Motorists found in violation are encouraged to rectify their practices immediately to avoid penalties.
