MANILA: President Benigno Aquino III has enacted the measure postponing the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls this month.
Aquino signed on Thursday the bill suspending the SK elections, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a press briefing, a record of which was uploaded to the Presidential Communication Operations Office website.
Valte said the newly signed measure amends Republic Act 9340 or the law that synchronises the Barangay and SK polls.
Both elections have been set on October 28, which has been declared a special non-working holiday. Due to allegations of corruption in the system, lawmakers have called for action on pending measures that would reform or scrap the SK elections.
The SK system has been criticized for allegedly becoming a breeding ground for political dynasties while exposing the youth to corruption.
