DOHA: The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) yesterday marked the first Arab Primary Health Care Day by engaging the public in awareness programmes at key locations in the city.

PHCC representatives welcomed the public at City Center, Villaggio, Landmark and Wathnan  malls with two key messages: What is primary healthcare and the importance of family medicine.

Dr Mariam Ali Abdul Malik, Managing Director of PHCC, said: “With a family doctor you always have a partner to guide you and help you manage your health. That personal relationship, along with the high professional standards and knowledge of our staff is at the core of PHCC’s strategy to achieve better health and well-being for the people of Qatar.”

PHCC promoted the core idea behind the primary healthcare with its ultimate goal of better health for all, including the basic principles of primary healthcare such as equitable distribution of healthcare, community participation, health workforce development, use of appropriate technology and multi-sectional approach.

While primary healthcare acts through a healthcare provider as the principal point of consultation for patients within a healthcare system and coordinates all specialists that the patient may need, family medicine is a medical speciality devoted to comprehensive healthcare for people of all ages.

It is a division of primary healthcare that takes care of the individual and the family across all ages, genders, diseases, and parts of the body. It is based on knowledge of the patient in the context of the family and the community, emphasising disease prevention and health promotion. This message was further confirmed with the appropriate gifts that PHCC has distributed to the visitors yesterday.

A flowerpot with an attached message ‘Grow your health’ was given to the public to be a growing reminder of the importance and dedication of the Primary Health Care Corporation.

The General Secretariat of the Arab States League in the Tripoli Declaration, seeking to improve the level of Primary Health Care Services and Family Medicine in the Arab States, declared November 4 as the Arab Day for Primary Health Care and Family Medicine.

The Primary Health Care Corporation will launch the primary health care strategy as the foundation of the health system in the country in 2013, in accordance with the principles of Qatar National Vision 2030 and Qatar National Health Strategy 2011-2016. The Peninsula
