TRIPOLI: Libya’s new government is to be sworn in on November 8, the head of the national assembly said yesterday, following protests over some of the ministers in the cabinet.

“The swearing-in ceremony will be on Thursday (November 8),” Mohammed Megaryef said during a televised meeting of the General National Congress, the country’s highest political authority.

Libya’s elected representatives gave their approval on October 31 to a 30-member cabinet presented by premier-designate Ali Zeidan weeks after rejecting his predecessor’s line-up.

The chief task of the new government is to organise fresh elections within 12 months on the basis of a new constitution, which has yet to be drafted.

The new cabinet includes members of the main Islamist and liberal parties in the assembly, but key portfolios were entrusted to independents.
