DOHA: Forty-six teams from 24 schools took part in the First Qatar Schools Debate League (QSDL) in English, organised by QatarDebate at Raba’a Al Adawiya Independent Secondary School for Girls (ISSG).
Participants included Aisha Bint Abi Baker ISSG, Al Bayan ISSG, Al Ieman ISSG, Al Jazeera Academy, Al Maha Academy for Girls, Al Resala ISSG, Al Shahaniya ISSG, Amna Bint Wahab ISSG, Arwa Bint Mutaleb ISSG, Birla Public School, Cambridge International School for Girls, DeBakey High School, Doha College, Doha Modern Indian School, DPS Modern Indian School, Dukhan English School, MES Indian School, Mesaieed International School, Newton International Academy, Pakistan Education Center, Qatar Academy, Raba’a Al Adawiya ISSG, Rawda Bint Jassim ISSG, and Zobaida ISSG.
QSDL included four preliminary rounds and the motions were ‘This house believes that sporting bodies should not penalise their sportsmen for their off-field behaviour’, ‘This house supports the rise in campaigns such as the ice bucket challenge’, ‘This house would make military service compulsory’, and ‘This house would prioritise organ donations to those who have lived a healthy lifestyle.”
The league was spread out through four tournaments and debate points earned by the top teams from the schools in tournaments were accumulated.
A total of 138 debaters and 69 judges took part in two categories namely — Open and English as a Foreign Language.
The top three teams in Open category were MES, Al Bayan and Doha College and the other category was led by Arwa Bint Mutaleb, Raba’a Al Adawiya and Amna Bint Wahab schools.
Top speaker in Open category was Zuha Sattar from Pakistan Education Center and Sondous Adel from Arwa Bint Mutaleb in the EFL category.
