DOHA: The Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday ratified the cabinet decision to set up a committee for monitoring fuel and storage stations, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported yesterday.
The committee will assess and regularly monitor the safety of petrol and service stations. There will be strict monitoring of how these stations store fuel and fill petrol. The decision says that the committee is to be set up under the chairmanship of a representative of Qatar Petroleum and another of the Ministry of Interior (General Directorate of Civil Defence) as Vice Chairman. A representative from the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Transport, Qatar Electricity and Water Corporation, Qatar Railways Company, Qatar Woqod Company will be member of the committee.
A representative of the owners of private fuel stations to be nominated by the President of Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry will also be the member of the committee. The committee will decide on the commercial activities to be housed within the precincts of a petrol station, and those which cannot. Currently, many petrol stations double as commercial complexes with eateries, supermarkets and laundries.
The panel will check how far the existing stations are complying with the upgraded standards and specifications involving health and safety.
