Congo's ruling party argues for changing constitution

Brazzaville - The ruling Congolese Labour Party on Friday repeated its call for constitutional changes that would pave the way for President Denis Sassou Nguesso to hold on to power.

"Today, changing the constitution is a necessity," PCT party General Secretary Pierre Ngolo said. "The constitution wears out as society evolves."

"We need to change the republic with a constitution that takes into account the demands of the moment," he added, echoing a call the party made in December.

The 2002 constitution in the Republic of Congo limits presidents to two seven-year terms and bars any one over 70 years old from running for the top office.

Sassou Nguesso is 72 and his second mandate is up in 2016.

Opponents and some civil society organisations have denounced what they see as attempts to prolong Sassou Nguesso's hold on power.

"Whether we change the constitution or not, the PCT is not going to be out of power in 2016," said Ngolo. "We want change for the future and stability of the country."
