DOHA: Qatar is taking steps to ensure that low-income workers in the country are paid wages through the banking system as is the case in the neighbouring UAE.

The Ministry of Labour is working closely with employers to expand the system whereby all workers in the country are paid wages through banking channels. Employers have welcomed the idea.

The ministry also hopes to amend some key provisions of the labour law to make stringent provisions for companies that fail to pay their workers wages or dues in time.

A draft of the proposed amendments has been forwarded to the State Cabinet for approval, according to a report submitted by the ministry to the Arab League.

The ministry has said in the report that it is keen to improve the work environment for expatriates and upgrade legislations that govern the job market.

Stringent punitive action has been proposed against those employers who delay wages or other dues, the report says.

The ministry has also talked about its earlier decision asking private companies to follow new and minimum space requirements, basic amenities and hygiene for labour camps, according to Al Sharq.
