Cleric killed in Thailand

BANGKOK: A well-respected Muslim cleric in Thailand’s violence-plagued south was killed yesterdayin one of the highest-profile assassinations of those working with the Thai government in resolving the southern insurgency. Imam Yacob Raimani, 50, was shot dead by an unidentified gunman who came with three other suspected insurgents at a market in Pattani city, Police Col Tuanday Juthanan said yesterday. 

Missing child’s mom quizzed

KUALA LUMPUR: The mother of a three-year-old girl who was found in Penang after being reported missing in Rawang, Selangor, has been questioned by Penang police. Arbaiyah Md Zin emerged from the Sungai Nibong station with her daughter, Wan Aisyah Exzam, at about 6:40pm after almost two hours with police officers. 

They were with a man, believed to be her former husband. Earlier, a woman sent Wan Aisyah to the station at about 11:30am. She told police her son had brought the girl to her home in Teluk Kumbar at about 5am yesterday.

Rescuers find fourth body

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian rescuers found a fourth body at sea yesterday as authorities said they may soon end the search for 36 other Indonesians missing after their boat sank on the way home to celebrate Eid Al Fitr. Asharudin Che Ami, an official with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, said authorities may call off the search Tuesday after just one corpse was recovered early yesterday and three on Sunday.
