DOHA: A patrol team of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) seized a private vehicle that was being used to smuggle diesel.
The vehicle belonged to an expatriate and its road permit had expired, the Ministry of Interior said yesterday.
The patrol spotted the vehicle stopped near a roundabout inside Doha city and they grew suspicious by its very appearance and the way it was parked.
When they approached the vehicle, they saw the engine running but there was none in the driving seat. The driver had run away sensing the presence of the police, said the Ministry.
When they inspected the vehicle, a large tank was found inside for storing diesel for the purpose of smuggling. The tank was covered by empty cartons to hide it from public view.
Captain Ayid Al Kaabi from Lekhwiya said that the patrol team took the vehicle into custody and towed it away from the road. It was later handed over to the Capital Security Department for further investigation. A search for the owner was launched immediately.
