Action against man for swindling $55m

DOHA: A man who is alleged to have cheated citizens to the tune of QR200m ($55m) has been caught and legal action is being taken against him.
The suspect was initially accused of cheating people of QR80m but after his arrest it dawned that the amount involved was QR200m.
According to Al Sharq, the man would boast that he owned large swaths of land and then entice his victims into visiting his house.
A large number of luxury cars would be parked in front of his house.  And once in, the man would open the drawers of his desk in his office in such a way that the victim could see gold bars stocked up.
The suspect would then take the victim to see what he claimed were his land. He offered plots, as also the luxury cars and gold bars, to his victims at cheaper rates.
He would insist that his victims give him only cash as he would accept no bank transfers. In lieu of cash, he would issue them bank cheques as a guarantee until the car or land was transferred in their names or gold bars delivered to them.
When nothing happened even after the passage of a lot of time his victims suspected foul play and approached the bank on which the cheques issued by the alleged fraudster were drawn.
They were shocked when told that the issuer’s account had no balance. Police complaints were made and the suspect was eventually arrested. The Peninsula
