Ajyal festival ends today with films on education and youth

DOHA: Three films on theimpact of education on youngpeople will be screened as themain feature of the last dayof Ajyal Youth Film Festivaltoday.Faridullah’s Day Off(Denmark, Afghanistan, 2013),directed by Jens Pedersen; Firein our Hearts (India, US, 2013)by Jayashree Janu Kharpade;and Poet Against Prejudice (US,2014) by Faiza Almontaserwill be shown as part of theBraveHearts programme at 5pmat Katara 12 – Theatre A.Faridullah’s Day Off charts thestory of an 11-year-old boy whodreams of getting an educationand opening a restaurant in aheartrending clash of realityand imagination.Fire in our Hearts highlightsillegal slavery that had affectedtribes people until the late 1970sin India until activists built thefirst school for them.Poet Against Injustice narrateshow the director, who emigratedto the US with her family fromYemen, has been able to inspireothers through her courage andpoetry skills.The Closing Night Red Carpetgala of Kahlil Gibran’s TheProphet, a fascinating movie cofundedby Doha Film Institute(DFI), will host actress SalmaHayek Pinault, producer ofthe film, writer-director RogerAllers, co-directors MohammedSaeed Harib and Joan Gratz andco-producers Clark Petersonand Jose Tamez.Film enthusiasts have theopportunity to watch a selectionof compelling shorts showcasedunder the Bariq and Baderprogrammes from films fromaround the world.The Bariq screening is at11am at Katara Opera Houseand will appeal to youngsters.The Bader Shorts screeningsare at 8.30pm at Katara 12 –Theatre A.
BraveHearts, Bariqand Bader screenings are free.As part of Sony Pop-UpCinema, the festival will screendirector Peter Jackson’s TheHobbit: The Desolation of Smaug(US, New Zealand, 2013) at8pm.The screening is free andguests can reserve tickets onlineat www.dohafilminstitute.com;seating is limited and availableon the first-come, first-servedbasis.A selection of festival-favouritefilms will also be screenedtoday.
