Geneva: Qatar is paying increasing attention to the issue of business and human rights as well as the UN ‘Protect, Respect and Remedy’ Framework and Guiding Principles, according to Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim Al Thani, Director, Human Rights Department, Foreign Ministry.
Promotion and protection of human rights is a strategic choice and cornerstone for the comprehensive reform policy pursued by Qatar, Sheikh Khalid told a meeting of the third session of the Forum on Business and Human Rights in Geneva.
He said Qatar’s attention is reflected in the establishment of a national working group to deal with business and human rights, under the Human Rights Department at the Foreign Ministry, with representatives from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, the Ministry of Environment, Qatar Petroleum, Diar and Ooredoo.
He said the mandate of the team, which comprises all stakeholders, is to promote and raise awareness of UN guidelines on business and human rights, and include them in national frameworks.
Sheikh Khalid said Qatar organised a training workshop on business and human rights in cooperation with the UN Working Group and the UN Centre for human rights training and documentation for Southwest Asia, in Doha.  QNA
