DOHA: The Public Works Authority — Ashghal — said yesterday it has completed upgrading of the roads and utilities network surrounding a number of sports halls hosting the 24th Handball World Championship to be held in Doha between January 15 and February 1.
The projects included the roads and utilities surrounding Lusail Multipurpose Hall, Al Sadd Sports Club, Lekhwiya and Qatar Clubs. Streets surrounding Al Sadd Club and the entrances and exits of the sports hall in Al Sadd have been paved. Lighting and signage has been installed and pedestrian paths were built besides a temporary parking facility with a capacity of 2,400 cars.
Streets leading to Lekhwiya Club and the sports hall were also paved and Qatar Club’s temporary parking lot was expanded.
In Lusail, new roads were built to improve traffic flow on the roads leading to the Multipurpose Hall, Lusail International Circuit and Lusail Shooting Club. The length of the new and improved roads extend to a total of 6.5 km with two lanes in each direction.
Six traffic lights have been installed at the intersections surrounding the Multipurpose Hall which is expected to see heavy traffic during the Handball World Championship. Permanent parking lots with a capacity of 4,500 cars have been built on the north and west sides of Lusail Multipurpose Hall with work including grading (excavation and backfilling), paving, marking parking lot lines and installing of drainage pipes.
Ashghal has connected the roads surrounding Lusail Multipurpose Hall with Al Khor Coastal Road, providing a way to and from the Multipurpose Hall and the sports Complex through the Temporary Truck Route that was completed and opened to traffic recently.
Ashghal announced traffic diversions on the entrances and exits leading to the service road west of Al Shamal road in the Umm Slal Ali area from January 9 until the third quarter of this year. The entrance and exit to the service road leading to Al Sakhama interchange will be closed. In addition, a stretch of service road connecting Al Sakhama and Umm al Amad interchanges will also be closed. Traffic will be diverted to secondary roads that will allow vehicles access to the service and local roads.
Motorists coming from Umm al Amad interchange on the Al Shamal Road and heading towards the service and local roads of the Umm al Amad and Umm Ubayriya west of Al Shamal Road must take a temporary exit at the road which has been constructed off the right lane of Al Shamal Road.
