Doha: Religious scholars  have called for reviving the societal role of mosques and transforming them into religious, educational and cultural complexes that contribute to the progress of the Islamic nation in all fields.

This came in a seminar held by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs’ Department of Research and Islamic Studies yesterday.

Entitled ‘cultural incubators: mosques as a model’, the seminar brought together Professor of Quranic Exegesis and Recitations at Qatar University (QU), Dr. Abdul Salam Al Majidi, Professor of Fiqh at Qatar University QU Dr. Turki Al Marri, and a number of imams and preachers at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.

Director of the Department of Research and Islamic Studies at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Ghanim Al Thani hailed the mosque as the cornerstone of the Islamic civilization, the cradle of Islam, and the school of scholars and thinkers over the centuries, stressing the seminar’s aims of restoring the role of the mosque as a cultural incubator in society.

Al Majidi hailed the mosque as a center of social security and the greatest place for various societal activities that builds a righteous person in societies.

He also highlighted the mosque’s historic political role as a hub for discussing the state’s general policy and international relations as well as welcoming delegations and holding negotiations.
