Doha, Qatar: Amir  H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani honoured Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) for winning the Rawda Award for Excellence in Social Work in the Non-Profit Organizations category, in recognition of its “Wayyakum” platform.

The award was organised by the Ministry of Social Development and Family to promote community initiatives and foster innovation in the social sector. On this occasion, Dr. Khalid bin Jabor Al Thani, Chairman of Qatar Cancer Society, expressed his pride and appreciation for this recognition, noting that it reflects the Society’s integrated institutional efforts and its ongoing commitment to serving cancer patients, improving their quality of life, and promoting awareness and community support. He emphasized that this achievement serves as a strong motivation to further advance humanitarian initiatives and maximize their sustainable impact.

Chairman of QCS highlighted that the award reinforces a spirit of positive competition among social institutions to deliver high-quality initiatives aligned with the Society’s vision of “A cancer-aware community and a better life for those affected,” which stems from Qatar National Vision 2030, focusing on sustainable development and human capital investment.

He further explained that the Society received the award for its “Weyakum” platform, a pioneering digital solution designed to support cancer patients’ treatment. The platform enables patients to apply for financial assistance and complete procedures electronically without the need for in-person visits, thereby streamlining processes and reducing the burden on patients. Applications are reviewed by a specialized committee within a maximum of 48 hours, based on defined criteria including financial assessment and medical documentation.

Dr. Al Thani confirmed that the Society follows a transparent model in which financial support is directed directly to healthcare providers. Treatment costs are settled in collaboration with institutions such as the National Center for Cancer Care and Research and Sidra Medicine, ensuring efficiency and accountability. These services are provided to residents within the State of Qatar.

He stated that in 2025, the Society facilitated treatment for 1,789 patients who were unable to afford care, with total expenditures exceeding QR 47.5 million. This was delivered through the “Weyyakum” platform, which is integrated with the “Sanad” platform of the Regulatory Authority for Charitable Activities, enabling streamlined processes and enhanced coordination of efforts.

He added that the Society’s digital transformation has significantly enhanced its support mechanisms by simplifying procedures and accelerating decision-making, ultimately easing patients’ challenges and ensuring timely assistance.

Dr. Al Thani also pointed out that while the social sector—particularly non-profit organizations—continues to deliver impactful initiatives, it faces challenges related to financial sustainability. He affirmed that the Society is actively working to diversify its funding sources through various projects and initiatives, strengthening its ability to sustain its services.
