DOHA: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) was evacuated yesterday afternoon following a bomb hoax. The bomb scare was created within the campus building hours ahead of their annual convocation, which was held at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
Students and staff were evacuated while Civil Defence conducted a thorough search before confirming the threat was a false alarm. CMU-Q on its Twitter account at 2.49pm said: “Due to a security alert at CMU-Q, students and staff are instructed to avoid the area. CMU-Q has been evacuated, Civil Defence on site.” It was followed by another status message at 3.43pm saying “update on the bomb threat at CMU-Q, the building has been inspected and the authorities have indicated that the building is safe to reenter.”
Students at the Northwestern University Qatar too were evacuated as the campus is housed in the same building of CMU-Q. Last year in November too Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Directorate took precautionary measures to address a verbal bomb threat delivered to one of the Education City universities.
