Doha: The Qatari Businessmen Association’s (QBA) Second Deputy to the Chairman, Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Thani Al Thani, held a business lunch in honour of the President of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Dr Jared L Cohon, at his Majlis in Al Gharafa.
Dr Cohon became the president of CMU in 1997 and has successfully guided the university’s global expansion efforts. He is an expert on environmental and water resource systems analysis, an interdisciplinary field that combines engineering, economics, and applied mathematics.
He is also the author, co-author, and editor of one book and more than 80 professional publications.
The delegation was received by the Chairman of the Qatari Businessmen Association, Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani, Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani, QBA member, Sherida Saad Jubran Al Kaabi, QBA Board member, and QBA members Dr Hussein Al Abdullah, Nabil Abu Issa, Abdul Hameed Mustafawi, and Maqbool Habib Khalfan.
Dr Jared L Cohon praised the major developments in construction and educational sectors that Qatar has witnessed in a short period, and noted that CMU has worked hard on preparing qualified graduates with the latest skills and knowledge to actively participate in the community affairs.
QBA members spoke about the achievements of Qatar in several fields, especially in the education sector, with the state vision seeking to transform the national economy to a knowledge-based economy under the direction of The Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Members also noted that one of the most important achievements of Qatar in this field was the establishment of Qatar Foundation which is chaired and supported by H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. The Education City has attracted a host of leading universities of the world to Qatar, and it is considered an important institute in the region that contributes to the education of youngsters.
Qatari businessmen also said that their interest in the education sector stems from their realisation that the real wealth of the country lies in preparing a generation of qualified youngsters capable of leading the country’s development. The members also stressed on the importance of promoting student exchange between Qatari and American universities in order to enhance cultural and scientific ties.
Dr Jared L Cohon thanked Sheikh Dr Khaled Al Thani and members of QBA for their hospitality, and said he wished for the continuation of a strong relationship between Qatar and American universities The Peninsula
