DOHA: At least eight people have died in two tragic road accidents in the city in the past two days.
Five people died in one accident alone which took place early yesterday afternoon on the Corniche-Al Wakra Road near the turn to Hamad International Airport (HIA). The car in which the deceased were travelling was hit by a Land Cruiser from behind and the impact of the collision was so powerful that the ill-fated smaller car caught fire.
The nationality of the deceased could not be confirmed. The Philippine embassy could not be immediately reached for confirmation. The accident took place around 1pm, according to the daily.
One woman, reportedly a Filipina, was left injured in the mishap and was rushed for emergency medical care, but her condition could not be known till the time of going to press.
Civil Defence and Lekhwiya (Internal Security Force) personnel reached the spot of the accident immediately and launched rescue operation and regulated the traffic. Al Sharq reported that the collision took place due to high speed.
Meanwhile, early on Sunday morning, three people died in a tragic mishap on the Corniche Road, local Arabic daily Al Raya reported yesterday.
Four cars were involved in the freaky accident and the dead included a Qatari national, a Bahraini and an Iranian, the daily said citing high speed as the cause of the incident.
The mishap occurred between Ras Abu Aboud flyover near the former airport arrival terminal and the traffic signals intersection near the Museum of Islamic Art. The accident occurred, a little after 2.30am.
It was a busy day yesterday for the emergency unit of Hamad General Hospital (HGH) as well, as some 1,300 people reported to the unit during the day time with different complaints, mostly stomach upsets and respiratory problems.
One person was reported dead due to heart failure. Among those brought to the emergency unit were six people who were injured in road accidents, and one of them was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Also admitted to the ICU were six people with cardiac-related complaints.
In the mean time, it is known that the man who died after his car was crushed sandwiched between two trailers late on Friday night was an Indian.
Prejo, from the south Indian state of Kerala, was 26 years old. He died when his car collided with trailers on Doha-Al Wakra Road at 11pm on Friday.
