Baghdad: The Security Media Cell announced that the Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi was subjected to a failed assassination attempt with a drone.
The cell said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "a failed assassination attempt against the Prime Minister, the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, by a booby-trapped drone, tried to target his residence in the Green Zone in Baghdad."
"The security forces are taking the necessary measures in connection with this failed attempt," the cell added.
Al-Kadhimi, who was present at his residence when the incident occurred, said in a tweet that he is fine, calling on all Iraqis to calm down and exercise restraint.
Meanwhile, two government officials said that Al-Kadhimi's house was subjected to at least one explosion, and confirmed to media that the Prime Minister was fine.
In the same context, Western diplomats present in the Green Zone, which includes government buildings and foreign embassies, said that they heard explosions and shootings in the area.
Mustafa Al-Kadhimi assumed the role of the Prime Minister of Iraq in May 2020.
