DOHA: Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has, between April 2012 and April 2013, carried out several projects to upgrade its water and electricity services and tackle the increasing demand of the different sectors.
One of the projects is the execution of the second phase of developing the strategic management for Kahramaa to comply with the Qatar National Vision 2030, the National Development Strategy 2011-2016, and the five-year corporate plan for the period 2014-2018.
The corporation also plans to follow up on a feasibility study of using nuclear energy to generate electricity and produce water as well as a proposal to expand its production capacity of electricity and water until 2036.
Kahramaa is working on the second phase of a project to provide the capacity to produce electricity and water to meet the demand of the two years of 2017 and 2018.
By signing a purchase agreement for the construction of a power and water desalination plant at Qatar Economic Zone 3 (QEZ3) using thermal technology and reverse osmosis technology.
And signing another purchase agreement for the construction of a desalination plant using reverse osmosis technology on behalf of Qatar Petroleum to meet the demand for industrial water for 2017 in Laffan Industrial City.
In GCC, Kahramaa is taking part in a feasibility study on regional water linking and the implementation of a project to develop a long-term strategy.
Additionally, the Corporation is involved in a study on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy to produce electricity and water, and is on the board of GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) and its sub committees.
Kahramaa continues to participate in studying the institutional and legal grounds of comprehensive Arab power linkage and the development of governance documents.
For joint Arab electricity market in collaboration with the World Bank and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development under the umbrella of the Arab League.
Kahramaa concluded negotiations with the Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) to extend a purchase agreement on production capacity of water and electricity from the Ras Abu Fontas plant for the period of 2015-2016 with an extension option of four more years.
The Corporation signed a purchase agreement to build a desalination plant with a capacity of 36 MIGD jointly with QEWC to secure the needed supplies of 2015 and 2016.
Between April 2012 and April 2013, Kahramaa carried out 71 projects in Qatar.
Including the expansion of major power transmission grids in the country, carrying out the construction work of underground cables, overhead lines and stations with a total of 965 internal and external stations.
In addition to renovation projects at high pressure stations, towers and transformers, Kahramaa examined 587 covered and outdoor stations, established and operated 1200 electricity-distributing stations, operated 1900 electric adapter at the electric distribution network, connected 7200 new building to electricity, and operated 46 feeders from the main new stations.
To handle emergency cases, a summer plan was put in place by providing emergency offices with specialized personnel and technical teams in order to accelerate response, fault detection and repair.
Professional technicians will be deployed to highly populated areas to swiftly respond to emergencies and keep power outages at minimal.
In the water sector, Kahramaa settled on a number of projects expected to be executed soon, including new water stations in Mukaynis and Zekreet to secure drinking water supply to Qatar Petroleum Dukhan, re-establishing the old Salwa water plant.
As well as setting up tanks, renovating wills and fixing radioactivity monitoring stations in sea water inlets.
Over the same one-year period, Kahramaa has also finished 12 water projects serving the areas of Musaimeer, Muaither, Al-Shahaniya, Dukhan, South Doha, Airport, Salwa, Al Gharafa and West Bay.
The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation is currently working on 24 projects listed in the plan for April 2013 to April 2014 to renew water plants and major tanks in different cities across the country.
In March 2012, Kahramaa water quality laboratory received ISO 17025:2005 quality certificate, which reflected the corporation's commitment to comply with international standards.
The certification means Kahramaa's laboratory is one of 135 worldwide non-commercial chemical labs allowed to use the logo of the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA). (QNA)
