DOHA: Qatar will be at the centre of the global communication industry this week with ‘ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Telecom World 2014’ conference kicking-off today at Qatar National Convention Centre. Participants from 165 countries will gather to explore the trends, developments and innovations in the field of information, communication and technology.
“ITU Telecom World provides a unique platform to bring together public and private sectors, leaders from government and industry, international organisations, consultants, media and digital experts – from all corners of the world. Over the next four days, we will explore how disruptive developments in technology are transforming our industry, our society and our world –creating a new future,” said Dr Hamadoun I Touré, Secretary-General, ITU yesterday in press conference.
Organised by ITU, the United Nations specialised agency for information communication and technologies, the event is hosted by the Government of Qatar, with the support of Ooredoo. “This edition of ITU Telecom World is focused on the future, exploring the trends, developments and innovations that shape our industry, our society and our world,” said Touré. Apart from government representatives and a new generation of entrepreneurs and app-developers, many of the world’s largest technology companies are taking part in the four-day conference.
“At ITU Telecom World, we will showcase the next generation of innovations and discuss how these will impact people’s lives. This week, you will see an incredible range of technologies on display – from Smart Cities, through to Smart Cars, through the Smart Stadia that will host global sporting events in Qatar over the next decade,” said Waleed Al Sayed, Chief Operating Officer, Ooredoo. “At ITU, we will be working with companies who will literally break new Internet speed records. There will be apps on display that can control everything from the air conditioning in your car, through to the lights in your home. Science fiction will become reality at this year’s Telecom World,” he said.
The visitors will also able to get the future of intelligent robotics as ‘Roboy’- a humanoid robot- is also on display.
“As a nation, we are investing in a world-class network infrastructure to support the projects currently under development. Qatar is incorporating mobile into every aspect of national development, becoming a truly smart nation,” said Waleed Al Sayed. “But beyond that, we are also reaching out, and working with countries around the world and leaders in innovation to ensure that the benefits of new ideas are shared, not just with the people of Qatar, but with customers everywhere. We are providing a bridge between East and West, between developed and developing world, and ensuring that the benefits of new ideas are felt instantly,” he said.
