National Day journalism contest for students

DOHA: Students from different schools are being selected to participate in the newly introduced journalism competition as part of the national day celebrations at Darb Al Saai.
The journalism competition is among the new categories introduced this year to promote students’ talents and encourage them to choose media as a career, said Yousuf Al Malki, one of the organisers.
Students will be divided into different teams to work on a national day story with pictures. Each team will have three members who will work together on their project. The winning entries will have to be published in English and Arabic newspapers in Qatar, he explained.
At the end of the celebrations, the best story and picture will earn the winning team a prize. Authorities have not yet disclosed the prize.
Al Malki made the announcement during a meeting yesterday that brought together representatives from different departments and organisations participating at Darb Al Saai to reveal their celebration programmes at the site. Darb Al Saai will officially be open to the public tomorrow and its activities will continue until December 20.
Dr Khaled Abdul Noor from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) said that HMC would be offering health education and awareness activities. It will also showcase several specialized garments worn by medical practitioners like doctors.
Maryam Al Hamadi from the Primary Healthcare Corporation (PHCC) said that a family health workshop will be held at the site for Qatari families.  PHCC experts  will also offer several awareness programs including a program on losing weight besides free diabetes tests to visitors.
Ali Mohammed Al Kuwari that the site will feature tents that resemble ancient Bedouin life, with its generosity, sheep, camels and falcons. The attractions will include Bedouin graphics,  Qatari dishes, and exhibition of handcrafts.
Major Abdul Hadi Al Marri from the Civil Defence Department said that they were having up to ten officials at the site and will also conduct awareness programmes about their activities in the country. The Civil Defence officials will also be responsible for ensuring safety from fires and related accidents at Darb Al Saai.
Riyadh Ahmed from the Traffic Department said the department will deploy officials and patrols to ensure safe traffic flow at the site throughout the celebration.
The ministry of environment will conduct drawing and painting competitions for children on different environment themes.
Other popular activities include Al Shaqab, where horse stables and camels are showcased and visitors are taught how to ride horses. Trained specialists will conduct horse riding trainings and also provide tips on how to care horses. A shooting sport will also be available in which visitors are taught the basics of shooting.  A popular Arabic football contest — Al Timba — held on a sandy play ground will also be held.
