Doha: A Doha resident has been recognized with a prestigious award presented to outstanding Mexicans living abroad. Cristina Cobos was awarded ‘Distinguished Mexican’ 2020 for her contribution to promoting Mexican culture.
A celebration was held at the Mexican embassy in Qatar recently to celebrate the achievement of Cristina.
Mexican Ambassador to Qatar H E Graciela Gomez Garcia stressed that the feminist foreign policy carried out by Mexico’s government and praised that this year seven Mexican women were awarded as ‘Distinguished Mexicans’ – like Cristina.
The Ambassador underlined that Mexicans like Cristina are the actual ambassadors of Mexico since they reinforce our identity through dance, language, culture.
“Cristina, you came here to triumph; you created a haven for many individuals from Mexico and Latin America, and you brought together amazing people, creating community,” said the Ambassador.
The award ‘Mexicanos Distinguidos’ was created in 2018 as a proposal of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad to promote the valorization of the migration phenomenon and the dignified treatment of Mexicans living abroad.
“I am so touched; this is one of the most important days of my life. I want to thank Ambassador Graciela Gomez; she is looking into culture and arts, not only into business, politics, and commerce,” said Cristina.
Since 2016, Cristina has been a Spanish, literature, and culture teacher at GEMS American Academy.
From 1987 to date, Cristina, dance teacher of Polynesian, Mexican folkloric, flamenco, Latin, and Bollywood. She was the founder, director, and choreographer of Ballet Folklórico México Lindo in Singapore. Since August 2009 to date, co-founder, director, and choreographer of the Latin American Folkloric Ballet in Qatar.
