TRIPOLI: Libya’s General National Congress yesterday failed to agree on what action to take about the embattled government of Prime Minister Ali Zeidan, a member said.
His administration has been under fire for failing to tackle security problems and end an oil crisis that has dragged on for months after protesters shut key terminals, accusing the authorities of corruption.
“The political groups that met yesterday did not reach a consensus to bring the government down,” Asma Sriba, a member of the GNC, the country’s highest political authority said.
“Tomorrow (Wednesday) the coordinators of the political groupings will meet again to try to reach a common view on wide-reaching reforms concerning not only the government but also the congress,” she said.
On December 29, dozens of protesters calling for Zeidan’s resignation blockaded the premier’s office and foreign, agriculture and telecommunications ministries in Tripoli for several hours.
Dozens of demonstrators also gathered outside the GNC building yesterday and tried to stop lawmakers from leaving until they had withdrawn confidence in the government.AFP
