ICC launches environment campaign, contest

Doha: Abdulla Al Kuwari, Director, Environment Education and Awareness Department, and Eiman Al Marzouqi, Civil and Environment Engineer from Qatar, inaugurated a six-week campaign and a competition for affiliated organisations of Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) for Global Environment Challenges.
The grand finale will be hosted with an ‘Environment March Past’ along the Corniche to be flagged off by the Minister of Environment H E Ahmed Amer Mohamed Al Humaidi on Qatar National Environment Day on February 26.
Sunil Thapliyal, Coordinating Officer, ICC, and Second Secretary at Indian embassy attended the launch, along with heads of affiliated organisations, representatives from Indian schools, Indian companies as well as Indian community leaders and members.
Al Kuwari praised the Indian community for their contribution to the development of Qatar and pledged support of the ministry.
Al Marzouqi, Ambassador to Qatari-UK Graduates Forum, highlighted environmental issues and thanked the community for its initiative.
Girish Kumar, President, ICC, urged support from all Indians for the campaign. He proposed a similar campaign and competition for Indian companies in Qatar and said such programmes will be held every year. He said winners of the campaign will be honoured with the Ambassador’s Rolling Trophy.
He said ICC plans to invite Prof Rajasekharan Pillai, Executive Vice-President, ex-officio Principal Secretary, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, former chairman, University Grants Commission, and former vice-chancellor, IGNOU, New Delhi, for the grand finale.
Seenu Pillai, Vice-President, ICC, gave a presentation on the campaign and said ICC will try to reach out to about 100,000 people, 30,000 students and corporate houses through the campaign.
He said three programmes, awareness and competition on environment challenges, Project 5S (School Students Struggle for Sustainability and to Save Environment) and Al Wakra beach cleanup will be held.
