New Delhi: The Supreme Court yesterday issued notice to the BJP and the Congress asking them whether they were willing to explore the possibility of forming an alternate government in Delhi.
The apex court bench headed by Justice R M Lodha issued notice as it was told that the entire justification for keeping the Delhi Assembly under suspended animation was with an eye to possible defections in the existing legislative groups of different political parties in the legislature.
The court was told by petitioner Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that once the Assembly has been placed under suspended animation, it will remain so for one year, depriving people of Delhi a popular democratically elected government. The AAP has challenged the presidential proclamation of keeping the Delhi Assembly in suspended animation.
Jagdambika Pal quits from Lok Sabha, Congress
New Delhi: In a setback to the Congress, MP and former Uttar Pradesh unit chief Jagdambika Pal yesterday resigned from Lok Sabha as well as from the party, saying that the the emerging leadership did not need leaders like him.
“The emerging leadership probably does not need people like me. Hence I resigned,” Pal, the MP from Domariyaganj, said here without naming party vice president Rahul Gandhi. Pal, 63, has also been a three-time legislator and minister in the state.
Asked about his political options, Pal said he will go back to his constituency and meet the electorate to know their mind.
Supreme Court rejects Sahara’s repayment plan
New Delhi: The Supreme Court yesterday said the Sahara Group’s proposal to pay the entire amount to SEBI in cash instalments of `25bncrore each at regular intervals of three months was not acceptable.
The apex court said: “You should bring a proposal which is acceptable and honourable. This is a dishonourable proposal.”
The Sahara Group told the court in the morning that it will deposit `190bn of investor’s money with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in cash instalments of `25bn each at regular intervals of three months, thereby extinguishing all outstanding claims by July 2015.
High Court notice to Virbhadra, wife
Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh High Court yesterday issued notice to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, his wife Pratibha Singh and the state on a petition seeking condoning of delay in filing a plea against a lower court order which acquitted the couple in a 2012 corruption case.
