DOHA: Qatar Fuel (Woqod), the sole dealer of LPG cylinders in the country, has launched a new campaign to encourage more people to switch from the metal cylinders to the light weight Shafaf cylinders.
Woqod is offering a discount of QR100 to those exchanging the metal cylinders with Shafaf cylinders that actually cost QR365. According to the new exchange offer, the transparent cylinders are available at QR265.
The new offer is part of a plan to phase out the metal cylinders in four years. The offer launched on March 1 will be available until May 31, a senior Woqod official has disclosed.
Speaking on the sidelines of the opening of a new Woqod fuel station in Al Wajbah on Thursday, Bul Qassim Al Shaabi, sales manager at Woqod, said that the company was encouraging people to shift from metal cylinders to Shafaf because they are more safe and easy to handle.
He said currently there are about 600,000 metal cylinders in the market while the number of Shafaf cylinders is only 150,000. This explains the company’s new campaign to promote Shafaf, which was launched in 2010.
The official claimed that the Shafaf cylinders are absolutely safe and no incidents of leakage or explosion have been reported until now.
They are called transparent because the customer can see the level of gas in the cylinder to decide when it has to be refilled, the official said.
Ibrahim Jeham Al Kuwari, CEO of Woqod, said that new facility in Al Wajbah is the 24th fuel station of Woqod in the country.
The company plans to build 100 fuel stations by 2019 and 12 new stations under construction will be completed by the end of this year or the beginning of next year.
Another project to expand 10 existing fuel station is about to complete, he added.
The company also intends to open vehicle inspection centres — Fahes — at existing petrol stations that have enough space for expansion.
“We have opened the 24th fuel station and the 25th will be opened in Jameelia, a remote location, this week,” Al Sharq quoted Al Kuwari as saying.
“We are trying to provide fuel stations in all areas where they are needed. The company is working to build 76 stations in four to five years,” he added.
He said Woqod will open several fuel stations in downtown Doha soon. The company has already got land from the government for this purpose.
With opening the new facilities, all areas in Doha will have Woqod fuel stations.
