Doha, Qatar: The bilateral ties between Qatar and Uzbekistan have witnessed remarkable growth, especially over the past three years, reaching what can be described as a “new level” of cooperation, Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Qatar, H E Ashraf Khodjaev has said.

Speaking to The Peninsula on the sidelines of the appointment of the Director General of Katara Cultural Village Foundation, H E Prof. Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al-Sulaiti, as Cultural Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Qatar yesterday, Ambassador Khodjaev  pointed out that 2023 marked a turning point, with high-level engagements intensifying significantly.

“Leaders of both countries held multiple meetings and exchanged state visits, laying a strong foundation for future collaboration. These high-level interactions created a solid base for intensifying cooperation and bringing a new dynamic to our relations,” he said.

Among the key milestones achieved, the ambassador cited the signing of a strategic partnership agreement and the launch of direct flights between Tashkent and Doha by Qatar Airways. These developments, he noted, have facilitated closer economic and people-to-people ties.

Economic cooperation has also expanded, with Qatari companies increasingly exploring opportunities in Uzbekistan. “Qatari firms are active in our market, implementing investment projects in sectors such as energy, infrastructure and agriculture,” Ambassador Khodjaev said.

Despite this progress, he emphasised that the current level of engagement does not yet fully reflect the vast potential available. “We still have many opportunities to explore together for the benefit of our peoples,” he added.

Speaking on the Katara Director General’s appointment, the Ambassador noted that it recognises Dr Al-Sulaiti’s sustained efforts in fostering cultural exchange and bringing the two societies closer.

“He has made a huge contribution to presenting Uzbek culture here in Qatar and enhancing our cultural cooperation,” Ambassador Khodjaev added.

He described the occasion as a “great event” and a significant step towards enhancing cultural dialogue in an increasingly complex global environment.

“This new initiative will help us strengthen our cultural diplomacy in a very difficult world,” the ambassador said, noting that Dr Al-Sulaiti has been a longstanding friend of Uzbekistan and has played a pivotal role in promoting Uzbek culture in Qatar.

Addressing regional developments, the ambassador praised Qatar’s diplomatic role, particularly its efforts in mediation and conflict resolution. “Qatar plays a very important role in promoting dialogue, peace and stability in the region,” he said.

Expressing optimism about the future, he voiced confidence that ongoing diplomatic efforts led by Qatar and other stakeholders would contribute to easing tensions and restoring stability.

“We are very optimistic,” Ambassador Khodjaev concluded. “With strong participation from Qatar and the international community, we believe the situation will improve.”
