Washington, United States: A Republican candidate backed by US President Donald Trump has won a runoff House election in Georgia to replace influential right-wing lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene, according to media projections on Wednesday.
Clay Fuller defeated Democrat Shawn Harris for the US House of Representatives seat in Georgia's 14th Congressional District, according to projections by CNN and CBS news after 99 percent of votes were counted.
Fuller won 72,304 votes, or 55.9 percent of ballots, while Harris came in at 44.1 percent with 57,030 votes, according to both projections.
"The results tonight are clear: Northwest Georgia stands with (Make America Great Again) and demands a fighter on Capitol Hill defending the America First agenda," Fuller wrote on Facebook late Tuesday, thanking Trump for his endorsement and support throughout the race.
Earlier in the day, Trump called Fuller a "fantastic" candidate "who has my Complete and Total Endorsement."
Fuller -- who will serve out Greene's term until January 2027 -- brings the number of House Republicans to 218, versus 214 Democrats.
Greene, who took office in 2021, was a figurehead of the MAGA movement that swept Trump into the White House, but she lost favor with president over her vocal stance to release files related to convicted Jeffrey Epstein.
Greene announced in November that she was resigning her role, slamming Washington as a place where she "never fit in" and breaking with Trump over issues including his administration's handling of Epstein's case.
Trump responded to Greene's resignation with his characteristic outrage, posting on his Truth Social platform by referring to her as "Marjorie 'Traitor' Brown" and saying she "went BAD."
Greene again lambasted Trump on Tuesday over the war with Iran, saying that he was "elected to go to war against America's deep state and to end America's involvement in foreign wars."
