Kolkata: Amid sporadic incidents of violence and a long list of allegations by the opposition parties, West Bengal witnessed an impressive turnout of 81.28 percent of the 88.87 lakh electorate as six Lok Sabha seats went to the hustings. The Election Commission termed the exercise in Jhargram, Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura, Bishnupur and Asansol constituencies spread over four districts as peaceful, barring isolated incidents.
Baramulla, Ladakh
Srinagar: At least 65 percent voting was seen in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency, while the turnout in Baramulla was almost 40 percent. Voting in the three districts of Baramulla Lok Sabha seat was 25.04 percent in Baramulla, 35.65 percent in Bandipora and 63.19 percent in Kupwara district. For the Ladakh Parliamentary seat the poll percentage was 65 percent.
Seemandhra
Hyderabad: About 80 percent of 36.76 million voters cast their votes to choose their representatives from 25 Lok Sabha and 175 assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh’s Seemandhra region where high turnout and sporadic clashes marked yesterday’s balloting. Around 20 people were injured in clashes.
Himachal Pradesh
Shimla: Almost 66 percent of the 4.8 million electors exercised their franchise in Himachal Pradesh where balloting for the four Lok Sabha seats was held peacefully. The state’s oldest voter, 97-year-old Shyam Saran Negi, and his wife Hira Mani, 87, also exercised their franchise in Kinnaur district.
Bihar
Patna: More than 53 percent of the electorate voted in Bihar as balloting continued peacefully for seven Lok Sabha seats. As many as 118 candidates are in the fray for the LS seats of Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Maharajganj, Saran, Hajipur and Ujiarpur.
Uttarakhand
Dehradun: Hundreds of thousands voted across Uttarakhand to elect five Lok Sabha MPs, with officials putting the polling percentage in six hours at 36 percent. Seventy-four candidates are in the fray in Uttarakhand’s five constituencies.
Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow: Braving the heat, hundreds of thousands of people came out to vote in the 15 parliamentary constituencies in Uttar Pradesh which went to the polls. More than 45 percent polling was recorded till 3pm. IANS
