DOHA: An exciting line-up of artworks by 21 Doha-based artists is displayed at the second annual Community Supported Art (CSA) Exhibition which opened yesterday at Katara Art Center (KAC).
The 20 artworks were chosen from over 250 submissions by a panel of judges who are experts in art. The artworks offer diverse and fresh concepts and were created using varied styles and materials.
One of the interesting artworks on display is ‘Vertebral Arch’, a sculpture which combines art and architecture and was inspired by the formation of a tortoise shell.
“My aim was to create an object which is an abstract version of one of the vertebral arches within a spine, and also bring in some spatial and architectural qualities within the piece,” said Reema Saeed Abu Hassan, the artist behind the sculpture.
Aisha Al Suwaidi, on the other hand, brings into light how Qatari lifestyle and culture has changed in recent times in her work entitled ‘Spice Pills.’ The work consists of three plain stainless steel dinner plates, each glued with a transparent pill containing crushed saffron, cardamom and ginger-spices which form quintessential flavouring for Qatari cuisine.
“As families don’t eat together as much these days, nor do they eat traditional food as much as they did before, the artwork reflects this transformation in society,” she said.
Catered to both artists and collectors, the exhibition was based on a concept which originated from the US wherein the artists produce limited edition works which collectors can directly purchase from the artists all at a uniform price.
In addition to the expo, CSA has an extended program which includes a number of art workshops aimed at helping emerging artists build their identity and portfolio. The expo runs until June 7.
