Doha: Two Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Doha have achieved a Guinness World Record and became title holders of the 'fastest crossing of Qatar on foot' for male and female.

The Philippine Embassy in Qatar, in a social media post, lauded their accomplishment stating: "The Embassy commends their great performance and representation of the Filipino community in Qatar."

"Romil and Michelle's historic milestone is a source of immense pride to our Kababayans not just in Qatar, but around the globe," the Embassy added.

Michelle Butiu set the record on April 6, 2023. The Filipina expat completed the challenge in 1 day, 6 hours, 23 minutes, and 42 seconds to become the latest title holder for the 'fastest crossing of Qatar on foot (female)' from Al Ruwais to Abu Samra.

She beat the previous record, by just seven minutes, from Indian ultra-runner Sufiya Sufi, which was achieved on January 12-13, 2023.

In a separate occurrence, Romil Abule attempted to break the record on October 20, 2022, from the previous title holder, Sadok Kochbati achieved on February 2, 2022. Romil surpassed the previous record to set a new feat within 1 day, 8 hours, and 59 minutes.

With his signature smile and persistence in running, Romil's goal is to be recognized as one of the best Filipino runners in Qatar.

"Romil wanted to achieve this record as a challenge for himself and to be an inspiration to others, especially his family," wrote the Guinness World Records.

Romil left the Philippines in 2012 for Qatar. He later took up running as a means to combat homesickness. This activity kick-started his sporting journey and has been doing it throughout the past ten years.
