NEW YORK: Arizona Cardinals rookie safety Deone Bucannon has not been able to participate in practice because he has turf toe, according to the Arizona Republic.
Bucannon was reportedly not moving well during practice this week.
The team has not said how long he will be out. Coach Bruce Arians has said there are areas where Bucannon needs improvement so the injury may set him back.
The Cardinals selected Bucannon with the 27th overall pick in last month’s draft out of Washington State. He is vying for a starting spot at strong safety.
Meanwhile, NFL sources told ESPN that they expect commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay for six to eight weeks and fine him about $1m.
Irsay was arrested in March for driving while intoxicated and recently had his driver’s license suspended for a year. He was charged with two misdemeanors. Each one carries a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. An initial hearing is scheduled for June 19.
Irsay, 54, entered a rehabilitation facility after his arrest. Goodell has not acted on Irsay’s arrest, but the expectation is that he will ban Irsay for about half of the upcoming season.
Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker’s horse Undrafted won the Jaipur Invitational on Saturday in an undercard race leading up to the Belmont Stakes.
The gelding, ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Wesley Ward, won the race by 1 1/2 lengths. The race had a purse of $300,000 with the winner receiving $160,000. AGENCIES
