Doha, Qatar: The Department of Islamic Research and Studies at Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has released the 214th edition of its renowned Ummah Book series, titled “Social Solidarity: An Ethical System for Promoting Community Security,” authored by Dr. Abdulsalam Rayyah.
The publication is the first in a four-part sub-series issued under the theme “Social Solidarity: The Natural Response to Divine Guidance.” The series explores the dimensions and far-reaching impact of social solidarity as a form of worship whose benefits extend beyond individuals to society as a whole, contributing to social cohesion, mutual support, and the strengthening of community bonds.
According to the Ministry, the book addresses growing concerns over a decline in the understanding of the true concept of social solidarity, as well as an increasing tendency among some people to favor solidarity models prevalent in other societies. It also highlights a lack of awareness regarding the close relationship between social solidarity and community security, emphasising that solidarity remains a fundamental factor in maintaining stability and social peace.
The publication seeks to correct common misconceptions surrounding social solidarity and its societal impact. It aims to elevate the concept beyond its commonly understood forms and promote approaches that preserve the dignity of those in need while fostering stronger social relationships and greater collective responsibility.
The book examines the various forms, dimensions, fields, resources, and beneficiaries of social solidarity. It also discusses the mechanisms through which solidarity can be implemented, identifies challenges that hinder its effectiveness, and proposes practical solutions. Through this analysis, the author demonstrates the role of solidarity systems in strengthening social structures, reinforcing unity, and enhancing societal resilience.
Commenting on the release, Sheikh Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Ghanem Al Thani, Director of the Department of Islamic Research and Studies, described the publication as a valuable addition to the Islamic scholarly library.
He said the book “lays another building block in developing a new awareness of the value of social solidarity and its broad impact on the lives of individuals and communities.” He noted that the study offers an important examination of the dynamic relationship between social solidarity and community security, highlighting the capacities, mechanisms, and psychological influences of solidarity that help purify hearts, foster goodwill and brotherhood among people, and ultimately contribute to social stability.
Sheikh Dr. Ahmed added that the book serves as a meaningful call to strengthen human connections, educate and nurture Muslims on the principles of solidarity, and establish social solidarity as a familiar and deeply rooted social culture.
He stressed that when solidarity regains its vitality and becomes embedded within the collective consciousness of society, its mechanisms naturally regain their effectiveness, allowing them to perform the vital social roles they fulfilled throughout previous generations.
