DOHA: Under the patronage of H E Sheikha Al Mayassah bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of board of trustees of Qatar Museums, and H E Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani, Vice-Chairman of the board,
H E Sheikh Hamad bin Salman Al Thani unveiled a photo exhibition ‘On Route 66’ at Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art on Friday.
It showcased stunning photographs taken by Sheikh Hamad bin Salman Al Thani and Rashed Al Mohannadi during their trip along America’s iconic Route 66.
Their eye for detail and skills were evident from images they captured throughout the inspiring journey from the east coast to the west coast.
Sheikh Hamad bin Salman Al Thani said: “Route 66 is historic and has a lot to do with the American culture, which is a melting pot of different cultures. So going through seven states and different time zones inspires you and teaches you how to appreciate these cultures.”
US Susan L Zaideh praised the exhibition and the photographers’ efforts in capturing the diversity of the US through their lens.
About the photographs and the idea of showcasing them in such a manner, she said: “They (Sheikh Hamad bin Salman Al Thani and Rashed Al Mohannadi) saw small towns and big cities and Americans of all ages and backgrounds and from all walks of life.
“I’m pleased that Rashid and Sheikh Hamad had the opportunity to take this journey, and were able to bring back such stunning photographs to share in Qatar. Exchanges like this go far to develop our better understanding of one another’s cultures, and build strong people-to-people relationships between our two countries.”
The photographs captivated the audience with their rich colours and extensive assortment of themes and subjects.
Sheikh Hamad bin Salman Al Thani explained stories and details behind each photograph and why he and Al Mohannadi decided to capture those particular moments with their fascinating photography.
Asked to reveal the secret behind the remarkable photographs, Sheikh Hamad bin Salman Al Thani expressed his deep connection with his work and the intricate planning for it and said, “For every photo I take it becomes second nature to think before it. Sometimes in a particular situation, it is spontaneous reaction. I choose my subject, then compose it and click but it takes me no time.”
While some photographs focus on historic landmarks spread across Route 66, others highlight everyday American life and its intricacies that inspired the photographers during their journey.
The expo aims to connect the local community with foreign geographies and cultures and strengthen mutual bonds.
