ANKARA: An explosion targeting a pipeline in eastern Turkey early on Monday has halted Iranian exports of natural gas to Turkey, a Turkish energy ministry official told AFP.

The blast occurred at 0422 (0122 GMT) local time near Dogubeyazit town, in the eastern province of Agri, the official said speaking on condition of anonymity.

It was not immediately clear if the blast was caused by sabotage, and the official that said an investigation had been launched.

Kurdish rebels fighting for a homeland are considered by the Ankara government to be the main suspects behind such incidents.
