Chennai: The DMK yesterday urged the central government to put a stop to the violent acts by AIADMK cadres and supporters in the state following the conviction of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in a graft case.
The DMK passed a resolution to this effect at a meeting of its district secretaries held here. The meeting was chaired by party president M Karunanidhi.
Condemning the violent acts of the AIADMK cadres, the party urged the central government to intervene and put an end to such actions. According to the DMK, the state machinery has been affected and if this situation is allowed to continue, the law and order in the state would be beyond redemption.
Former chief minister and AIADMK general secretary Jayalaltihaa was sentenced to four years in jail by a special court in a disproportionate assets case.
Meanwhile, Tamil actress Maya yesterday attempted suicide in front of police commissioner’s office here to protest the imprisonment of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha.
“Maya had come along with her daughter and a can of kerosene. Both tried to self-immolate themselves, but they were luckily stopped by officials on duty,” a police official from Vepery police station said.Agencies
