The World Singles Championship began yesterday morning in Doha, Qatar with step two in the competition commencing.
The top 32 men and the top 32 women from the qualifying rounds will be battling it out for a chance to advance to tomorrow’s step three.
Christopher Via from the USA will lead the men’s group going into step 2 after a brilliant surge in play after the last qualifying game.
His improved form saw him narrowly overtake Sweden’s Peter Hellstrom who has played consistently since day one of the competition.
Finishing not far behind Hellstrom, in third place going into step two, is USA competitor John Janawicz, followed by Thailand’s Annop Arromsaranon in fourth and Sweden’s Martin Paulsson in fifth.
Current number one ranked player leading the women’s group is Birgit Poppler from Germany.
Poppler comes into step two after holding the lead since day one of the qualifying.
Next on the board are Colombian superstars Clara Guerrero and Rocio Restrepo.  Guerrero had a remarkable turnaround in her performance during yesterday’s games to bring her up to second place just in front of fellow team mate, Restrepo, in third.
In fourth and fifth are Singapore’s New Hui Fen and Malaysian Li Jane Sin.
Players have started step two on a score of zero and will bowl in groups of eight with the top two of each group advancing to step three.
Step three will decipher the four best men and four best women moving on to the semi-finals which will take place today.
